In 1912, the Navy assigned diver and gunner George D. Stillson to research and evaluate diving equipment and procedures. It took Stillson three years to complete his task, taking the best attributes of every style helmet (also referred to as hardhat or hat) in use at the time and developing what would become an iconic symbol of Navy diving: the Mark V diving helmet. He also tested diving tables and decompression methods.
